The traditional massages

It must be considered a therapy and as such has nothing to do with sex. It originated in pre-Buddhist India and has been practised here for centuries - some swear only by it when it comes to ailments such as pain, fever or nervous stress. It came into fashion by the turn of the 18th century. King Rama III, grandfather of the present king, gathered all the available knowledge and had it engraved on stones. It is now preserved in the Temple of the Lying Buddha (Wat Pho) in Bangkok, with stebs showing different postures for massage.

The traditional massage is performed according to the original method true to the description in the Temple. You may resort to a physiotherapist (man or woman) trained at the Wat Pho specialised school, and this everyday for a reasonable price (250 baths). Most 3-star hotels include this traditional massage in their fitness program services. Contrary to the preconceived ideas, patients will keep their clothes on.

The Wat Pho massage school also delivers a10-day training course for those wanting to learn these traditional techniques for a fee of 6000 bahts. For further information, contact their services within the temple precincts, Chéputhon street, or phone at (662)225-4771 : herbal therapy according to Thaï tradition. As a faithful addict myself, it's well the first thing I do on arriving and the last thing as well when I leave. If you want to go there, ask the taxi driver for Wat Pho Temple; there ask for the massage school (massage = nouate). Both warmth and massaging will have you fall asleep. Should it become painful, just say "tchèp" = douleur. And if you want to chat further with the therapist (man or woman as it's just a question of availability), print my mini dictionary.
